From Chants to Cheers: The Commencement of UPD ROTC Mil Sci 2 C.Y. 2023-2024 / Kicking Off ROTC Mil Sci 2 Course C.Y. 2023-2024

The echoes of Duty, Honor, and Country once again resonated through the halls of the Department of Military Science and Tactics (DMST) Complex as the UP Diliman Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (UPD ROTC) officially commenced its Military Science 2 (MS2) course on 17 February 2024.

The opening program, marking the beginning of a new chapter for cadets this semester, started at 0830H with the formation of the entire battalion of cadets from the Alpha Company, Bravo Company, UP ROTC Band, and Civil-Military Operations (CMO) Unit in the quadrangle of the DMST Complex. Despite the physical distance, the UP Manila Unit participated in the event through an online livestream. Each unit showcased their enthusiasm with unique chants, embodying their spirit of camaraderie and pride.

The invocation was led by Ms. Racquel Escolar, the Field Artillery Unit Sponsor, followed by the rendition of the national anthem performed by the renowned UPD ROTC Band which captured the essence of patriotism in every note. 2LT ELMAR JOHN O ANICIETE (MAC) RES, the NSTP ROTC Coordinator, then delivered the opening speech, welcoming the cadets once again. Subsequently, 1LT ALDWIN A GALAPON (AGS) PA (RES), the UPD DMST Administrative Officer IV, along with the other administrative and training staff, were introduced. This was followed by the introduction of CMaj Cacey D Calixto 1Cl, the Corps Commander of the UP Corps of Cadets, of the new corps organization for the second semester. Additionally, the UP Corps of Sponsors (Diliman) was introduced by the Corps Sponsor, Ms. Lanel Rose C Cordova.

One of the program’s highlights is the formal commencement of MS2 by COL PETER B OCCIANO GSC (QMS) PA, the Officer-in-Charge for the UPD ROTCU. COL OCCIANO shared insights from his own ROTC experience, inspiring cadets to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The program concluded with the singing of the Hail the Corps and UP Naming Mahal, played by the UP ROTC Band. 

Following the opening program, cadets were directed to their respective rooms, where they had lectures on “Military Correspondence” and “Military Customs and Traditions 2” led by their newly designated platoon leaders. Meanwhile, the UP Manila Unit participated in synchronous online discussions via Zoom. Additionally, the Learning Management System (LMS) of the UPD  ROTCU and a QR code attendance system were introduced to the cadets, enhancing their learning experience. Beyond academics, the UPD ROTC aims to foster camaraderie among cadets, and so, with the return of the cadets for MS2, also comes the Sponsor’s Time. This helps build closer bonds and lasting relationships among the cadets.

In essence, the opening program not only inaugurated MS2 but also served as a testament to the commitment and dedication of all continuing cadets. Here’s to a memorable and enriching experience for all MS2 cadets as they continue to honor the values of Duty, Honor, and Country in their pursuit of excellence.
